Ceramic Wall
Tile
There is nothing more beautiful than ceramic wall tile. Ceramic is made of a variety of
clays and then made into a shape and kiln fired at extremely high temperatures until it is hard. This hard fired
tile is called bisque and while it is bisque it can either left as it is or glazed. Whether it is left in its
natural state of glazed depends on what it will be used for. Ceramic tile is used in residential and commercial
applications and depending on their resistance they can be used in light, moderate or heavy traffic areas.
The glazed tile is most commonly used in residential and commercial areas. When a tile is glazed it has a liquid
glass added to the body and kiln fired again at extremely high temperatures in order to make it hard and non
porous. When the tile is glazed it is then stain resistant, scratch resistant and fire resistant. In addition, the
color of the tile will not fade in the sunlight. It is also slip resistant and easily cleaned and maintained.
Ceramic tiles have an absorption percentage rate and using that percentage rate determines the kind of project
that ceramic tile can be used for. A non vitreous or semi vitreous tile can be used indoors as it can absorb from
three percent to seven percent more moisture. A vitreous tile which has an absorption rare of three percent cannot
be used in temperatures that at freezing. A tile that can be used outside in any weather and is resistant to
freezing is an impervious tile and it absorbs five percent moisture. As a tile increases in weight it gets stronger
and absorbs less moisture. When determining the conditions in which the tile will be used the aforementioned basis
is used.
The process of making ceramics is not new as the ancient Mesopotamian people perfected the art of making
ceramics and used in their homes a wall tile. However, the process of making and using ceramic wall tiles did not
enter Europe of the Americas until sometime in the sixteenth century. Ceramic tiles are strong and durable and have
been used for centuries as wall tiles and continue to be used to day as wall tiles. It has become a popular and
favored material for wall tiles and floor tiles as well as countertops.
The ancient people used ceramics for pottery and ceramics were used in China inside their furnaces. Ceramics
were used to make dentures and bridges and in some cultures ceramics were used in religious traditions.
